HEART 9/11 deployed teams – which included FDNY, NYPD and the Greater NY Building Trades – and two pickup trucks with trailers full of equipment to the Wilmington, NC area. The HEART 9/11 response team worked for 17 days, logging in 1,144 volunteer hours, with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) initially coordinating high-water evacuations and preliminary medical assessments of those victims stranded in households due to the storm. The HEART 9/11 response teams then turned their attention to addressing the needs of first responders, veterans, the elderly and disabled removing debris and mucking-out damaged homes.
