HEART 9/11 was proud to contribute as Senior and Structural Advisors with Enterprise Community Partners creating “Keep Safe: A Guide For Resilient Housing Design in Island Communities” and was in San Juan this week at the release event.

To meet the immediate demand for practical design and construction guidance a manual was created to help shape housing construction in Puerto Rico,  the U.S. Virgin Islands and Florida Keys. The manual seeks to make reconstructed homes able to sustain impacts from natural hazards like hurricanes, earthquakes and flooding. The manual features strategies on resilient energy and water systems for homes; protection of roofing and structural systems; strategies to enable habitability of homes without power; strategies to embolden communities and how to implement strategies outlined through code compliance and funding.

Keep Safe was designed specifically for Puerto Rico’s climate, culture, and architecture and contains general guidelines to achieve maximum resiliency.
