HEART 9/11 received funding from Today I’m Brave under the 100Roofs initiative to support the organization’s continue roof rebuild and pre-apprentice program in Orocovis, Morovis, Puerto Rico.

HEART 9/11 received funding from SOMOS UNA VOZ  to be utilized to continue roof rebuild in Morovis, Puerto Rico. Residents impacted by Hurricane Maria received rebuild or repair of roofs to primary residences through HEART 9/11’s Pre-Apprentice Program; providing apprentices new skills and a job trade.


HEART 9/11 Pre-Apprentice Program October 2018 – Ongoing

The mission of the HEART 9/11 Pre-Apprentice Program is to train community members in the field of carpentry to rebuild/replace roofs that were damaged by Hurricane Maria. Further, once the pre-apprentice completes the training gainful employment will follow with NGOs, private companies or acceptance into a union Apprentice Program. The pre-apprentice program will consist of both hands on roof repair with union experts and classroom instruction.

  • 10-week HEART 9/11 Pre-Apprentice Program
  • Highly skilled bilingual instructors from the Carpenters Union and local Puerto Rican instructors
  • Students receive classroom and job site training while rebuilding houses in their community
  • Classroom instruction includes OSHA 10 worksite safety, basic mathematics, tool inventory, tool
    and material identification and maintenance, CPR, first aid, blueprint reading, use of measuring devices, basic rope safety
  • Instruction focuses on worksite safety, tool safety and the importance of building codes and standards to meet or exceed local requirements


  • Develop a skilled construction workforce in Puerto Rico to meet the immediate infrastructure and housing needs
  • Provide a resilient adaptive training model to meet the ongoing construction needs beyond the rebuild period of 5-10 years
  • Build sustainable infrastructure, housing, hospitals and schools that are building code compliant and resistant to damage from future storms


HEART 9/11 Hurricane Maria Response Team September 25, 2017 – Ongoing

  • 695 expert HEART 9/11 members deployed – 241 Carpenter volunteers
  • 40,758 volunteer hours – 11,005 Carpenter volunteer hours
  • Communities served: Playita, Orocovis, Morovis, Cantera
  • HEART 9/11 medic team conducted medical assessments
  • 250 roofs completed
  • 73 other projects completed (tree/debris removal, tarping, etc)


HEART 9/11 and Today I’m Brave 100ROOFS PROJECT – September 2018

  • HEART 9/11 began working in Puerto Rico with Ramon Rodriguez, Rosie Perez and the Today I’m Brave 100Roofs Project repairing and rebuilding 100 roofs damaged by Hurricane Maria
  • With their financial support HEART 9/11 launched a 10-week Pre-Apprentice program that provided local Puerto Ricans with skills to rebuild their community and learn a job trade
  • Students received hands-on training from highly skilled bilingual HEART 9/11 instructors
  • Residents impacted by Hurricane Maria received rebuild or repair of roofs through HEART 9/11’s Pre-Apprentice Program


Governor Cuomo’s NY Stands With Puerto Rico Initiative June 17 – August 25, 2018

  • HEART 9/11 was one of three NGOs chosen to execute Governor Cuomo’s 10-week initiative
  • 78 SUNY/CUNY student volunteers trained
  • 6,240 student volunteer hours
  • Selected to facilitate union construction members and SUNY/CUNY students


Governor Cuomo’s NY Stands With Puerto Rico Initiative January 4-16, 2019

  • Selected for a second time to facilitate union construction members and SUNY/CUNY students over winter break
  • Repaired/rebuilt 21 roofs in two weeks logging 1,656 student volunteer hours


Vietnam, Morovis House Rebuild February 4 -18, 2019

  • Rebuilt entire home from the foundation up to provide a family in need with a safe and comfortable place to live
