HEART 9/11 and 100Roofs Pre-Apprentice Program, supported by Today I’m Brave, Ramon Rodriguez, Rosie Perez, has graduated the first class of 17 pre-apprentices in Orocovis, PR. The HEART 9/11 Pre-Apprentice Class 2 began February 20 with 19 students enrolled. To date the pre-apprentice students have completed 102 roof rebuilds. The 10-week program provides local Puerto Ricans with skills to rebuild their community. Teachers are highly skilled bilingual HEART 9/11 instructors. Students received hands-on training from HEART 9/11 skilled volunteers while rebuilding roofs along with classroom instruction covering home assessment – demolition, foundation, roof replacement, building materials and tools required, project timeline, proper use of power tools, ladder safety, framing instruction, how to handle and cut roof metal, installation of hurricane straps, use of different sized beams, nail patterns, soffits and overhangs. (Students wear gray shirts and yellow hard hats, HEART 9/11 instructors wear navy shirts.)
