It is nearly impossible to believe that Hurricane Sandy hit our shores three years ago today. HEART 9/11 members and volunteers serviced 120+ homes – gutted, mold remediation and rebuilt 242 homes in Sheepshead Bay, Staten Island, Rockaways, Breezy Point and Gerritsen Beach. HEART 9/11 thanks every home owner for trusting our volunteers to work in their homes and our donors – the Robin Hood Foundation, The Mayor’s Collaborative Initiative, Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, The Enterprise Foundation, The Patricia and John Rosenwald Fund, Gerritsen Beach Cares, Children’s Health Fund and Visiting Nurse Services of NY among others. The participation of the Building Trade Unions was critical, especially the N.Y.C. District Council of Carpenters, Local 79 – New York City, LIUNA, District 9 Tapers and Painters and the Marble & Tile Union. Along with rebuilding homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, HEART 9/11 introduced Psychological First Aid to the community, identified and trained community leaders in this resiliency program and left a Community Mental Health Awareness Plan in place for the community to continue healing. We are still in touch with many individuals and families helped during our 55 week Hurricane Sandy Response. Friendships were made in the community and many now volunteer with HEART 9/11 members when the call for help goes out. HEART 9/11 is proud and humbled to continue our Hurricane Sandy Response in Monmouth County NJ November 13-19, 2015 doing sheetrock and framing repairs along with window replacements. HEART 9/11 is helping this impacted community build back stronger and become more resilient.
