Sheepshead Bay, Staten Island, Rockaways, Breezy Point, Gerritsen Beach
• 120+ homes serviced – gutted, mold remediation with support from the Edward John and Patricia Rosenwald Foundation and the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund
Robin Hood Relief Fund Grants
• Contracted for 150 homes to be rebuilt between February – November 2013
• Awarded three separate grants to support rebuilding efforts for individuals affected by Hurricane Sandy
• Rebuilt 242 homes – 92 more than contracted – on budget, ahead of schedule, no injuries
• Core volunteer workforce efforts included Laborers Local 79 – New York City, LIUNA, New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters, BuildingWorks, NY Building Trades Council, District Council of Ironworkers, the Carpenters Union Apprentice Program, Council 9, IUPAT, Painters and Allied Trades
Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City Grant
• Resilience Boot Camp presented to 200 residents to help expedite recovery from cognitive, emotional, social and financial impacts of Hurricane Sandy
• Resiliency training for six to eight community peer-instructors
American Red Cross/Brooklyn Community Foundation Grant
• Provided training in Mental Health First Aid to up to 60 residents in Gerritsen Beach embedding in the community an early warning and intervention cadre of neighbors who can identify and assist neighbors who are in early stages of a mental health crisis
Additional Projects
Moore, OK EF5 Tornado Response
• Incident Assessment and Management Teams deployed to Moore, Oklahoma to help fellow HEART 9/11 OKC Police and Fire Department members cope with the tornado’s horrendous effects where on the ground within 24 hours of the EF5 tornado
• Provided safe passage for homeowners to return to their ravaged homes as well as ensuring safe environments and providing logistical coordination for other less experienced non-profits
Firehouse Build – Fond Parisien, Haiti
• International Response Teams returned to Haiti to build a firehouse for the community in 7 days – part of an ongoing commitment, since 2010, to the people of Haiti to help them rebuild their lives and communities
• Trip sponsored by Jefferies & Co. which has allowed HEART 9/11 to continue serving the people in these mountain villages
Veteran Home Build – Manchester, CT
• Home build in partnership with Purple Heart Homes for Staff Sergeant Sandra Lee. HEART 9/11 volunteers included FDNY, NYPD, Greater NY Building Trades, Manchester Police and Fire Departments along with new friends from the Newtown Police Department
Veteran Home Build – Brick, NJ
• Home renovation in partnership with Hope for the Warriors for Iraq War veteran and 9/11 First Responder, Chief Petty Officer Colin Redy, USCG (Ret.) and family of 6
