Within hours of the storm, HEART 9/11 members responded to the hard hit communities of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. During the next 55 weeks, with financial support from the Robin Hood Relief Fund, and the expertise of Local 79 Laborers, NYC Carpenters, Ironworkers, Tapers, Painters, Marble and Tile workers and so many NY Building Trades Unions, HEART 9/11 was able to respond to the community’s immediate needs – gutting and rebuilding homes, community centers and churches. HEART 9/11, understanding the emotional toll of Hurricane Sandy on its victims, implemented along with their partners the Children’s Health Fund and Visiting Nurse Services of NY, behavioral health training and therapy. Thank you to the thousands of volunteers that made up our skilled workforce who, without their hard work and commitment, this would not have been possible.
